NORTH Stradbroke Island Indigenous elder Aunty Joan Hendriks will receive an honorary Doctorate from the Australian Catholic University on May 4, at a graduation ceremony at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The Doctorate is in recognition of Aunty Joan's contribution as an elder and educator in Aboriginal education, and reconciliation and justice for Indigenous Australians.
It is the university's highest honour and is given to people who have given outstanding service to the institution by meritorious cultural achievement or public service.
The Doctorate follows two prestigious accolades bestowed on Aunty Joan in recent weeks.
The Queensland Catholic Education Commission created a special award in her honour, the Aunty Joan Hendriks Spirit of Catholic Education Reconciliation Award.
Lourdes Hill College also recently honoured Aunty Joan with its first International Women's Day Woman of the Year award for her involvement in cultural awareness and her role as the Elder in Residence.
