MOBILE phone carriers Optus and Vodafone have announced plans to upgrade the mobile phone tower at the Alexandra Hills Hotel, after the Bayside Bulletin's story this month about mobile phone black spots in the suburb.
The two mobile phone companies said works on the tower at 332 Finucane Road, on the corner of McDonald Road, would include building six new antennas and removing three old ones.
Both companies said the works would be "low-impact" and would be completed this year.
A Vodafone spokeswoman said before the upgrade could start, Optus had to sign a joint lease for the tower site and engineers had to test the structure is adequate to hold the extra equipment.
After a recent story on mobile phone blackspots, the Bayside Bulletin Facebook page was inundated with comments.
Readers identified areas in all suburbs where there was poor or no mobile phone coverage at times.
Particular areas mentioned were Redland Bay and Mount Cotton along with the Maridale Park estate area of Capalaba. There were also complaints from around Passage Street and Oyster Point in Cleveland, Coochiemudlo Island, Victoria Point and Wellington Point close to the coast.
Several areas in Alexandra Hills were pinpointed as having black spot areas, including Windemere Road and Sevenoaks Street, but with different results with different providers.
Vodafone fared the worst for its coverage, while specific providers had black spots in some areas.
