Redland Ratepayers will be consulted on key aspects of the Redland Planning Scheme before a draft is sent to the state.
At Wednesday's full council meeting, Division 10 councillor Paul Bishop’s plea for extra consultation on changes to the scheme before it goes to the state was rejected 6-4.
A draft Redland Planning Scheme must be presented to the state government and ready for public consultation by January 2015.
Cr Bishop said if the community was not consulted now, the next phase would be too late for public input to be included in the final scheme.
He was supported by councillors Murray Elliott, Craig Ogilvie and Wendy Boglary, who warned of the dangers of drafting a planning scheme without consulting the community.
Cr Ogilvie said it was imperative to find out if the community wanted to change the urban footprint with greenfield development or a mix of infill projects before the scheme was drafted.
However, Division 9 councillor Paul Gleeson said it was too early to ask the community.
“This is still a work in progress and it would create confusion asking people their thoughts now,” he said.
In 2012, the council decided to consult the public on information to go into the draft scheme.
Cr Julie Talty said when the draft scheme was completed, there would be more consultation.
She said the community would be asked about a range of things including land availability and an economic development strategy.
More than 6000 public submissions were lodged during the last Redland Planning Scheme consultation in 2006.
