PARENTS of students at Vienna Woods State School will be warned about roaming dogs after a wallaby was found dead in the school’s car park on Wednesday last week.
Residents near the Alexandra Hills school in Heffernan Road reported the incident to police, the RSPCA and Redland City Council.
However, it took a call from Redland City Bulletin to school principal Jacqueline Fiedler before the school and the Education Department decided to inform parents.
An Education Department spokesman said no one witnessed the wallaby’s death and there was no evidence to suggest it was mauled by dogs.
Residents, who wish to remain anonymous, said the wallaby was found dead with two dogs standing over it.
The two dogs, believed to be a bull Arab and a Rottweiler, were seen at the school during the day on Wednesday and the wallaby was in the school grounds for three days before the attack.
The department spokesman said the dogs had not presented a safety risk to staff or students but when they were spotted on school premises on Wednesday afternoon they were chased off the grounds.
The spokesman said since the event, school staff had reminded students animals were not allowed in the playground and gave tips on how to stay safe from dogs.
"Updates on the school's actions will be made in the next school newsletter, however, the school grounds are secured by a large fence and gates at the entries," the spokesman said.
“Schools are not required to report the discovery of dead animals on their property to regional or central office.
“The issue has been raised with Redland City Council and the school will continue to work with them to resolve the situation.”
Redland City Council officers visited the area on Friday to investigate complaints of roaming dogs and said they could find no evidence the wallaby died from a dog attack.
