MOST athletes spend years of training before coming close to reaching the pinnacle of their sport.
Bailey Mills is an exception to this. At just six years old, he has become the world number one BMX rider in his age category.
The pint-sized speedster beat his rivals in the 5-6 years category to come first at the BMX World Championship in Rotterdam, The Netherlands last month.
Bailey contested last year's competition, but was knocked out in the semi-finals after crashing.
His mother, Annabelle, said her son was thrilled with the result.
"Bailey was determined to get there and I think it actually took some time for him to understand what he achieved," she said.
"It was quite surreal coming home."
Bailey was not the only member of the family to shine at the competition; his older sister, Sacha, came fourth in the eight years girls' category, improving on her performance last year.
Annabelle said the pair was already hard at work training so they can qualify for next year's competition, despite only just returning from the 2014 contest.
"We definitely want to be in Belgium this time next year."
