The Redlands stood proudly in the cultural spotlight last week when people from as far afield as Denmark visited for the South East Queensland Small Museums Conference 2014.
The 100-strong conference included delegates from small museums across South East Queensland, representatives from the Victorian branch of Museums Australia, guest speaker and executive director of the International Institute for the Inclusive Museum Professor Dr Amareswar Galla, from Denmark, and others.
Presented by Redland Museum and North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum, the four-day conference, from August 21 to 24, was held at a range of venues, including Redland Museum, North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum, Redland Art Gallery, Redland RSL Museum and UQ Moreton Bay Research Centre at Dunwich.
Under the theme of 'Pathways -- connecting museums and communities', delegates enjoyed a program of thirty local, national and international speakers, a Masterclass conducted by Professor Galla, social events, and tours of Cleveland and North Stradbroke Island.
Redland Museum president Ross Bower said the conference was “very satisfactory”.
“People came from as far as Melbourne, Sydney, Denmark, Toowoomba and Mackay,” he said.
“The important thing is to get small museums engaging with their communities.
“Today’s museums have a great role to play in being a community place where people can come, get involved and tell their stories.
“They are a focal point for a community’s sustainability.”
