THE days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer, which means Redlands’ snakes are uncoiling from their winter rest.
Cleveland snake catcher Tony Morrison was called out to two jobs in Thornlands last week, one of which included an encounter with a particularly foul-tempered reptile.
“A few whip snakes were in the back yard and then one had a go at me,” he said.
Mr Morrison said now was a good time for people to clear tall grass around their homes and keep doors closed to prevent an unwanted guest from coming to visit.
However, he urged anyone who finds a snake in their house to call a professional.
“Carpet snakes and green tree snakes are the most common snakes you see in homes in the Redlands, but thankfully neither of them are venomous,” he said.
“There are some red belly black snakes in Ormiston, Victoria Point and Redland Bay, but you don’t often find them in houses.”
Mr Morrison stressed that anyone who comes across a snake should not try to kill it.
“It is illegal and it very dangerous,” he said.
“The majority of snake bites happen to people when they try to kill it.”
