THE state government has called for tenders to provide $5.1million of services for 12 regions, including the Redlands, for victims of domestic violence.
In Redland City, the state money will be used to provide counselling and support services for children of domestic violence victims, help in court and to set up a Perpetrator Intervention Program.
The Redland tender, strongly supported by Redland City mayor Karen Williams, will also cover Wynnum Magistrates Court, which has dedicated hearings for domestic violence cases.
It will allow for a court support service worker to be at Wynnum and Cleveland Magistrates courts to help victims on days domestic violence matters are heard.
The successful tenderer will also use state funding to provide safety upgrades to the homes of domestic violence victims and assess and counsel perpetrators.
The money is part of the Stronger Families reforms, set up in 2013 after the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry.
Redland City’s three LNP members welcomed the tendering process which runs until November 3.
Mr Robinson said the state was investing $406 million over the next five years to tackle domestic violence.
He also invited the former Governor-General of Australia Quentin Bryce, who was last week appointed chair of a Special State Government Taskforce on domestic and family violence, to Cleveland.
Capalaba MP Steve Davies said the tender was part of a wider program including the recently announced Domestic Violence Taskforce headed up by former Governor-General Quentin Bryce.
“I know first hand the terrible repercussions DV inflicts on the whole family, so I am absolutely stoked that we are finally getting this much-needed support service in the Redlands,” Mr Davies said.
Redlands MP Peter Dowling said it would continue to fund the Women’s Legal Service.
