Bowman MP Andrew Laming will seek funding for the first stages of a bridge to Russell Island from a new federal grant program announced today.
Mr Laming said he would work with Redlands MP Peter Dowling to put in a bid for up to $10 million from the National Stronger Regional Fund program.
He said he would make "the economic case" to connect Russell to the mainland.
The National Stronger Regional Fund is designed to address social and economic hardship, including isolation and unemployment.
“Funding for a bridge linking Russell Island to the mainland definitely ticks those boxes," Mr Laming said.
“This money would kick off the initial stage, but represents only five per cent of likely construction costs.
“It’s vital that Redland City Council and the state government lead the way, because the application is likely to fail without their financial support.”
Mr Laming said the program would deliver $200 million over five years, with grants of up to $10 million up for grabs.
Mr Dowling said the funding bid showed a “commitment to improve living standards, health, education and employment opportunities for marginalised constituents on south Moreton Bay islands.
“With a four-way partnership between Redland City Council, State Government, Federal Government and south Moreton Bay Island landowners, the bridge will become a reality.”
