AN Olympic gold medallist has been sentenced in a Cleveland court for the second time this year for drug offences.
Chantelle Newbery, 37, received 18 months' probation in Cleveland Magistrates Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to two counts of possessing a dangerous drug and one count of failing to properly dispose of needle or syringe.
The probation order allows the champion diver to join rehabilitation and intervention programs.
At her last appearance for similar charges on July 10, Newbery was placed on a drug diversion program and no conviction was recorded.
She spoke to A Current Affair and The Australian after the first court case about her use of drugs to help cope with chronic depression.
She was the first Australian diver in more than 80 years to win Olympic gold, with her victory at the 2004 Athens games adding to a swag of medals at two Commonwealth games.
She retired after the Beijing Olympics to train up-and-coming divers.
