RESIDENTS of Cleveland's Island Street are kicking up a stink after smelly fish frames were dumped outside their unit block, which backs on to the tidal Ross Creek.
One resident, who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, called for council to mete out the maximum penalty of $113,850 for dumping fish frames.
He also urged council officers to live up to a "promise" to erect penalty warning signs about fish dumping along the creek.
Under the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011, penalties for basic littering and illegal dumping range from $3415 to $113850.
The resident said fish carcasses dumped into the creek on outgoing tides were often left high and dry to rot and stink in the sun.
Officers visited the site last week, hours after the fish was dumped and returned to clear the fishy waste at low tide.
Council said it had only received two complaints about fish dumping on Ross Creek this year and would continue to respond "on a needs basis" rather than erecting signs.
"As with all littering, dumping fish waste has the potential to cause general nuisance and odour concerns for residents and is illegal."
