Local police, volunteers and a Victoria Point business will join forces to ensure thieves don't screw over Redlands motorists.
One-way screws for registration plates will be installed for free at the Bunnings Warehouse Victoria Point car park between 10am and 2pm on Saturday.
Designed to counter the rising number of registration plate thefts in South East Queensland, the screws' design prevents them from being removed without specialist equipment.
Senior Constable Toni Orchard said stolen plates were often used to commit other property crimes.
"We find offenders regularly change their number plates to avoid detection by police and they go on to commit further offences like break and enters, ram raids and armed hold-ups," she said.
"If we can stop the theft of number plates we can detect the offenders a lot sooner."
Brisbane Bayside Crime Stoppers Volunteer Area Committee secretary Kathy Huf said the organisation, police and Bunnings had come together to provide the free service for Redland residents.
"We're having a barbecue the same day so people can come and enjoy a barbecue while they wait for the screws," she said.
The screws are available at hardware stores, but Senior Constable Orchard said Saturday's event would be the first where they would be provided and installed for free.
Drivers will need to provide their licence and registration papers to prove they own the vehicle.
