Fairfax Media has been nominated for 17 of the most prestigious awards in Australian journalism.
Fairfax secured nominations on Thursday across the board for the 59th edition of the Walkley awards.
Fairfax journalist Adele Ferguson has been nominated for four awards for her investigations into financial planning scandals at the Commonwealth Bank and the Macquarie Group. Her work launched a Senate inquiry into financial planning in Australia.
Middle East correspondent Ruth Pollard was nominated for her feature writing on the bombing of schools and hospitals during the war in Gaza.
South-East Asian correspondent Lindsay Murdoch picked up a nomination in the international journalism category for his coverage of the Baby Gammy surrogacy.
Nick McKenzie, Richard Baker and Marcus Strom's investigations into union bribery, racketeering and death threats in the construction industry landed them a nomination for best print story.
Sydney Morning Herald photographer Brendan Esposito's work on the devastation of typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines was nominated for the best photographic essay.
Columnist Waleed Aly was nominated for his opinion pieces on Australia's race hate laws and asylum seeker policy.
Fairfax's regional papers also performed strongly. Newcastle Herald journalist Robert Dillon picked up a nomination for best regional coverage for his work on Nathan Tinkler's battles with the Newcastle Knights. This also won him a nomination for best sports journalism.
Walkley advisory board chairman Quentin Dempster said the 2014 Walkleys received a near-record number of entries.
"It is a testament to the standing of these awards in encouraging and recognising high standards in Australian journalism," he said.
The winners of the 59th Walkley Awards will be announced on December 4,
