Common people with common dreams.
It's a simple concept, but one, in a time of uncertainty and confusion, can be easily forgotten. Enter Welcome to Australia with their Walk Together event.
Held in 19 different cities across the nation, including six in Queensland, the event aims to raise awareness of the sometimes challenging conditions for refugees settling into Australia, while celebrating the contributions different cultures have made to the nation.
Brisbane Walk Together co-ordinator, Fahim Khondaker, said it was an chanceto celebrate and embrace cultural diversity.
"It is an opportunity for us to celebrate our cultural diversity and our differences and the multi-cultural society we live in," he said.
"In this current climate, it's a reminder that we can all get along as people.
"It is more than refugees and any particular minority group. It is just about everyone.
"The theme they are following nationally is common people, common dreams. So no matter where we are from, where our background is, we all are people and we all have common dreams and common rights."
Mr Khondaker said sometimes reminders were necessary.
"At the moment, if you read the news, or listen to the radio or watch TV, it is just quite sad and because the negative stories make headlines so much quicker and so much more often, " he said.
"It is always good to step back and realise those negative stories are small minority and so it is a good reminder for us, almost a common sense check and it reflects normal everyday life more often than not and sometimes we need that."
Chinese dragons, Korean drums and entertainment from all over the world will keep the Brisbane crowd amused, as it walks from the Kuripla Bridge from 1pm to the Supreme Court plaza, where more entertainment awaits. To coincide with National Mosque Open Day, Imam Uzair Akbar of the Holland Park Mosque will deliver a speech.
