Birkdale motor racing driver David Russell has taken pole position for first race in the Porsche Carrera Cup series on the Gold Coast on Saturday.
In a close qualifying session on Saturday morning, Russell fended off Steven Richards by just .01 sec to secure the top position.
Race one of three is at 1:20pm Saturday on Channel Seven.
Russell is driving the number 23 JBS Porsche 991 as a relief driver for Roger Lago and doubling up in V8 Supercars with Rick Kelly in the number 15 Nissan Altima in the Gold Coast 600.
After previously partnering Roger Lago in the Phillip Island Pro-Am event in May, Russell was handed sole-driving duties for the final two 2014 rounds at Bathurst and Gold Coast, and commenced the final round with the strongest form in Friday practice.
on Friday, Russell’s lap record pace of 1:12.8524 eclipsed the best times of the top title combatant Warren Luff and Steven Richards, who posted the second and third fastest times, from Shae Davies, Nick Foster, Craig Baird, Sam Power, Nick McBride and ninth-placed Michael Almond.
