WEDNESDAY'S Redland City Council meeting will discuss setting up size limits for houses on the southern Moreton Bay islands.
Council officers have recommended houses should not be smaller than 60sq m, excluding garages and verandahs.
The move would involve changes to council’s fees and charges with a recommended base charge of $510.
Division 5 councillor Mark Edwards raised the issue after a house of 20sq m was built on Russell Island.
The officer report said the size limits would guard against small houses being built on many of the islands’ cheap, vacant blocks.
“Very small housing products are ideally supported by high levels of residential amenity and access to services,” the report said.
“The bay islands, at this time, have limited services and facilities that would generally not support very small houses.”
Also on the agenda will be the naming of some foreshore land in Church Street, Victoria Point, in honour of the late Dr Noel Barker who died in August.
Council will also vote on the schedule for next year’s general meetings.
