SOUTHERN bay island residents will be hit with a 4.2 per cent price hike in barge fares for cars on Monday.
It will cost residents $49.50, or an extra $2, to take their car on a one-way trip from the islands to Redland Bay.
Walk-on adult passengers travelling to the islands will pay $6, up $1, and children’s fares will rise from $2 to $3.
Residents will have to pay $60 to take a ute across on the barge, up from $58.
A same-day standby fare will be $60 and a weekend special will cost $50.
For non-residents, the standard fare for a car will rise by $2 to $59 and for a large ute, the cost will be $69, up from $67.
The cost of taking vehicles between the islands will also rise and will cost $29.50, up from $28.50, to take a car from Russell Island to Macleay.
Stradbroke Ferries David Thomson said the price rise was only for southern bay services and equated to an across-the-board 3per cent hike, in line with changes to the Consumer Price Index.
“This is a simple cost-recovery and is a small fare adjustment to reflect the Brisbane CPI increase on our services to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands,” he said.
He said Stradbroke Ferries was looking at restructuring how it charged for services to North Stradbroke Island but had not set a date for the new pricing structure to come into effect.
The last price hike for North Straddie services was in 2012 and for southern bay services on September 30 last year.
All advance pre-paid bookings for southern Moreton Bay islands will be honoured at the current rate. All bookings made on, or after November 3, will be at the new rates.
