I refer to the proposed introduction of shark nets in Raby Bay (September 24). Shark nets would have dire consequences for not only sharks but other marine animals including dolphins, dugongs and migrating whales as they would be unwillingly caught.
Would it be more feasible to build a shark enclosure instead of a shark net? The cost and maintenance of shark nets would surely be more costly than the construction of a shark enclosure.
It is no secret that Raby Bay has a healthy population of sharks and there have been sightings and some caught on lines.
An enclosure would ensure locals and tourists may swim at Raby Bay with a good chance of personal safety.
I feel there should be some consideration for a shark enclosure to not only protect families and tourists, but to also protect our marine life in Raby Bay.
