Initial police investigations suggest a 4WD which overturned near Jabiru Swamp on Fraser Island, killing one and hospitalising seven others, was overtaking another vehicle at the time it rolled.
A 22-year-old British national died at the scene at approximately 2pm Friday, though there were early conflicting reports about her age and nationality.
Queensland Police said in a statement on Saturday afternoon that they believed the crash vehicle was travelling in a convoy of three and heading south towards Hook Point when it tried to overtake another vehicle.
The Fraser Coast Chronicle reported the deceased woman had been staying at Rainbow Beach and was returning to make the ferry crossing to Inskip Point when the 4WD hit a ditch on a gravel track.
Aside from the deceased, the driver and another passenger were airlifed to Hervey Bay Hospital in a serious but stable condition after suffering head injuries.
Five passengers were taken to Gympie Hospital with injuries.
It is believed the majority of the group were German and were part of a Rainbow Beach tag-a-long group; a type of tour recommended for tourists after a series of rollovers sparked an overhaul of the industry in 2009.
RACQ's CareFlight helicopter has been called to Fraser Island three other times in the last month, to airlift a Brisbane man to hospital with suspected ribs on October 5, then to airlift a woman from the island with a suspected snake bite a week later.
A team was also called to the scene of a single vehicle rollover on Thursday.
