WORK will start in few weeks on the construction of the $55 million velodrome at Chandler for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation chairman Nigel Chamier said the velodrome would the best facility in Australia for cycling and would attract world interest.
Brisbane-based firm Cox Rayner Architects designed the Queensland State Velodrome which will be built at Sleeman Sports Complex beside the SuperX BMX track.
It will be one of two sporting venues in Brisbane for the Commonwealth Games – the other is the Belmont Shooting Range.
The velodrome is scheduled for completion in 2016 well ahead of the opening of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April 4, 2018.
The project will generate 185 jobs in its construction phase.
Mr Chamier said Chandler was selected because it could serve cyclists from the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Brisbane and was an ideal spot for ongoing events.
“It is very close major arterial roads to provide quick and easy access and with Brisbane as the State capital it will provide better opportunities to attract worldwide events,” Mr Chamier said.
