Tis the season ... for the mid-year fiscal and economic outlook.
And the government has said it is beginning to look a lot like surplus.
But the mid-year budget update Treasurer Tim Nicholls is expected to deliver on Thursday isn't expected to be all sunshine and lollipops.
At least according to the Opposition, which got in early to criticise the government's economic management, particularly the state's unemployment rate, which remains the highest in mainland Australia.
Curtis Pitt pointed to the Westpac Bank's Coast to Coast report which was released on Wednesday, which highlighted the state's unemployment.
The government promised to lower unemployment, then at 5.5 per cent, to 4 per cent over six years during the 2012 election. Mr Nicholls has since referred to the 4 per cent goal as a "stretch target".
It has consistently blamed Labor for the state's woes, claiming the "$80 billion black cloud of debt", which includes the debt carried by the state owned corporations, had left "a big mess to clean up".
But the government has also consistently pointed to 2015 as the "year it all comes together" for the state. Premier Campbell Newman has often pointed to next year as when Queensland would have the nation's leading economy, with a predicted growth rate of around 6 per cent.
The state is also on track for a fiscal surplus for the first time in a decade and the government hopes to pass its privatisation plan past voters at the next election, to enable it to kick start the economy through industry and infrastructure projects.
But Mr Pitt said the government had stalled the state's economy with its cost-cutting measures and sackings.
"The softness in the Queensland economy is due to a lack of confidence, brought about by the LNP's reckless doomsday rhetoric and the severe cuts they inflicted on almost every sector," he said.
"The mid-year update can't be used as an excuse for the LNP's asset sales. It must clearly define a way to tackle Queensland's decade high, GFC-style unemployment rates and lack of growth."
