Fuel prices across south-east Queensland could continue to fall steadily through to the new year, according to the RACQ.
The average price for unleaded in Brisbane was likely to drop to $1.23 a litre over the Christmas/Boxing Day holiday, with the five-year low expected to continue into next week.
In Sydney, prices were already under $1.16 and experts said they believed fuel prices there would drop to $1 a litre.
National Roads and Motorists Association spokesman Peter Khoury said he expected the price in Sydney to get very close to $1.
The last time the average national petrol price was below a dollar was in the the week of February 12-20, 2005. Kerry Packer was still alive, Mario's Let Me Love You, was No.1 on the billboard charts, Ricky Ponting had just captained his first home test series and Schapelle Corby was yet to be convicted.
In Queensland, RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said motorists should fill up today and take advantage of the cheap prices.
“We are already seeing fuel prices the cheapest they’ve been in five years and there’s every chance they could go lower,” Ms Ritchie said.
“We’re seeing some retailers selling for less than $1.20 a litre. We believe the fair price to pay is around $1.23 a litre, so if you see it for less, then snap it up.”
Ms Ritchie said the weakening of the global oil price was responsible for the drop on the price of unleaded fuel.
Sydney and Melbourne motorists were already getting prices below $1.16 a litre with Brisbane traditionally around five cents more.
