COOCHIEMUDLO Island residents are concerned a walking deck attached to a new jetty is too low to the water and will be submerged during a king tide.

Redland City Council and the state government spent $4.6million building the new jetty and demolishing the old one.

Waterway Constructions, under the supervision of the Department of Transport and Main Roads, started building in December.

Since then, residents have questioned the design, which leaves about 1m clearance from the high tide mark.

Council officers measured the jetty's height and the state government has been asked to check the structure's design and efficacy.

Coochiemudlo Island councillor Lance Hewlett said residents were concerned water would be sprayed across the walking deck in bad weather and at king tides.

Work is also expected to start on the $2.6million Victoria Point jetty and pontoon renovations after dredging at the Point was completed last week.

Decking along the Victoria Point jetty will be replaced.

Work at both sites is expected to be completed by March, when the new jetties will become council-owned community resources.
