Notorious media-boycotter Marshawn Lynch did not mince his words when he took to the podium at the Super Bowl's Media Day on Tuesday.
Asked 29 questions, he offered the same response 29 times: "I'm just here so I won't get fined."
Lynch was, after all, only there so he would not get fined. The NFL has strict requirements for players to front media and he had nearly five minutes of time to fill to meet his obligations.
To be fair, Beast Mode, as he is known, warned media from the outset that he planned to be in repetitive mode for the interview.
"I'm just here so I don't get fined so y'll can sit here and ask me all the questions y'll want to. I'm going to answer with the same answer so y'll can shoot if y'll please," he said after taking the stand.
The first "I'm here so I won't fined" was met with laughter by the hundreds of reporters surrounding him, but more than four minutes later his response had not changed.
Even a bid by NFL legend turned NFL network reporter Deion Sanders was unsuccessful. That conversation went like this.
Sanders: "Does it bother you with all the attention and they just want you to talk and you really don't?"
Lynch: "I'm just here so I won't get fined."
Sanders: "I pretty much know why you won't talk. Is it because you don't trust anyone or they could misconstrue your words?"
Lynch: "Just so I won't get fined, boss."
Sanders: "Are you still about that action boss?"
Lynch: "Just here so I won't get fined."
After nearly five minutes repeating the same phrase, Lynch suddenly shouted "time" on his Media Day appearance and walked away.
It is at least a development of sorts for the Seattle Seahawks running back.
He has twice been fined $50,000 for not talking to reporters and he copped a $20,000 fine for grabbing his crotch after scoring a touchdown in the Seahawks' NFC championship win over the Green Bay Packers.
Lynch also appears to have extended his word base for the latest press conference. At one last year, he answered nearly even question with "yeah" and at another he repetitively responded with "thanks for asking" or "I appreciate you asking".
His quietude seems to bother the Seahawks less than it does the NFL.
"First off, let's not miss that he is a very unique individual and he has a way that we have embraced, that we understand Marshawn and we support him every way we can," his coach Pete Carroll said this week.
"But, he is a very unique guy and he's got his own way of looking at things and he's also a very private person too."
It seems that the only way to get Lynch to talk is to provide him with a bowl of Skittles. Why? He adores Skittles. He eats them during games, he signed a sponsorship deal with the brand, fans throw them at him when he scores.
"I'm thankful for the opportunity to have Skittles asking me questions today," he starts the mock press conference posted online by Skittles on Monday.
