Brisbane City Council says it has no plans to investigate the tenure of the city's former pound operator, despite the Victorian government deciding to review the Lost Dogs' Home after being "inundated" with complaints.
Last month the Victorian government said it would investigate LDH shelters in its state over claims of high euthanasia rates, as well as concerns over animal accommodation and housing, re-homing assessments and identification of animals' owners.
While animal welfare activists made similar complaints against the LDH in Brisbane, the council's lifestyle chairman Krista Adams said no investigation would take place.
LDH ran Brisbane's council shelters at Bracken Ridge and Willawong from October 2011 to October 2014, coming under fire for its dog and cat kill rates.
LDH statistics from 2013/14 showed that of the total admitted animals in Brisbane, 69 per cent of dogs and 8.5 per cent of cats were returned to their original owners.
But in terms of re-housing unclaimed animals, LDH's Brisbane's shelters were the worst performers of the organisation's centres in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland last financial year.
For animals who were not reclaimed, or didn't have an owner in the first place, the situation was dire. Brisbane was the only council area under LDH control in the three states where more unclaimed dogs were killed than re-housed.
The Brisbane City Council has always publicly backed the LDH.
"The Lost Dogs Home were engaged to improve rehoming rates for healthy and suitable cats and dogs and they successfully delivered on this goal," Cr Adams said.
"They helped improve rehoming rates and no healthy and suitable dogs and cats were euthanised since after they commenced management in 2011."
According to council statistics, the number of cats and dogs that came into the LDH's care increased, meaning more animals were killed. By the end of LDH's three-year contract, kill rates were nearly identical to when they started.
In 2013/14, 17 per cent of dogs and 63 per cent of cats were euthanised, with a high number of cats unsuitable for rehoming. Three years earlier, the kill rate was 17 per cent of dogs and 62 per cent of cats.
There were 590 dogs and 1553 cats euthanised in 2013/14, figures showed.
Council Opposition Leader Milton Dick said he never supported the council's decision in 2011 to outsource operations at the two pound sites, a move that saved ratepayers about $1 million a year.
"In light of the serious allegations in Victoria, I would call on the Lord Mayor and the council to investigate and provide any evidence if there were the high kill rates as reported in other states," he said.
"The evidence presented showed we were seeing a higher rate of animals being euthanised when they did have the contract."
Animal welfare group Saving Pets, who campaigned against LDH, also called for a Queensland investigation.
"If it were a hospital management who under-performed for several years, harming the vulnerable, there would be no question that we'd want to know why," spokeswoman Michelle Williamson said.
The Animal Welfare League began its contract as the Bracken Ridge and Willawong shelter operators in October.
