HOPES for a road to the Basin at Amity Point were put on ice last week when Redland City Council voted to defer a decision on spending $402,000 to build a road to the beach.
Amity Point residents were barred from driving cars and boat trailers through the Amity Point Camping Grounds in 2013, after the site was taken over by Minjerribah Camping.
A petition, signed by 70 frustrated residents, called on council to build the road on land behind the campsite for those who wanted to launch small boats, dinghies and tinnies into the Basin.
Owners of the campsite, Straddie Camping, said non campers could still walk thought the grounds but extra cars posed security and safety threats.
Residents said access was hindered by a security-card-controlled boom gate. Others said it was too far to carry their kayaks and small boats 200m through the campsite to the boat ramp.
Last week's council meeting was told a 380m road, running from the community club behind the campsite to the beach, would cost a minimum of $402,000.
An officer report dismissed the road saying it would be too expensive and part of the allocated land was radioactive following tailings dumped form mining in the 1970s. The report also said a boat ramp and car park would also have to be built along with the road.
Instead, council decided to investigate other ways to access the Basin.
