AN extra 37 beds and three surgical theatres will be part of a $38.4 million expansion at the Mater Private Hospital, in Weippin Street, Cleveland.
The hospital, located next door to the public Redlands Hospital, has 60 inpatient beds and two theatres.
The expansion is expected to allow an extra 3000 theatre cases in the first year of operation and that was expected to rise to an extra 5750 cases a year before 2026.
It would also include a dedicated area for chemotherapy patients, a revamp of waiting areas, recovery spaces and the main entrance foyer.
Work is expected to be finished at the end of 2016 and is designed to ensure no disruption to current services.
A hospital spokesman said the extension would allow the hospital to meet growing demand for private health services in Redland City.
The spokesman said the extension would also allow more orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitation, respiratory medicine and urology as well as day case maxillofacial surgery, oncology, ophthalmology and plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Structural and civil engineering consultant Meinhardt designed the master plan for the project, which is due to start before June.
Architects Peddle Thorp will oversee the design development phase of the project.
