FOOTBALL legend Kevin Walters enthralled a crowd when he spoke of his dazzling football career at a lunch to raise money for The Cage Youth Foundation on Friday.
The former Kangaroos and Queensland Maroons premiership-winning captain had the crowd giggling when he gave a rare insight into behind-the-scenes at the Broncos, where he is now an assistant coach.
He steered clear of speaking about Wayne Bennett’s team’s poor form in their season debut on Thursday, going down 36-6 to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Walters, who followed his former coach Bennett from the Newcastle Knights, joined the Broncos coaching staff late last year.
During his short stint with the Knights, Walters was appointed as Halves coach by Bennett in 2014.
The Cage’s founder Linda Grieve, who previously worked for the Kim Walters Choices Program, invited the footy star to speak about how to “Make A Difference”.
“Kevin is a great speaker and I know him personally and asked him to help us fund raise,” Mrs Grieve said.
“The money raised is going to help us buy this amazing four acre (1.6ha) property we have at Redland Bay,” Mrs Grieve said.
“We have been here for a year at the end of April and are renting from a private owner in a hope of one day buying the property.”
Real estate agent Jesse James and principal of development company Fox and Bell’s Garry Hargrave attended along with councillors Lance Hewlett, Wendy Boglary, Craig Ogilvie, Mark Edwards and Julie Talty.
The Cage, which stands for Creating A Good Environment, is a self-funded charity which providing free services for young people and their families in need from its German Church Road premises.
It also provides mobile services at local skate parks, dance parties, days out and school health and wellbeing sessions, workshops and after-school programs.
