There has been a great run of tailor over the past two weeks; good quality fish to a few kilo have been caught in most estuaries, especially within a few hundred metres of a bar entrance.
There have also been some better quality fish in the surf in both northern NSW and Teewah, Rainbow and Fraser.
Whiting catches are great; fish seem to be slowly pushing their way back up into the upper reaches of rivers and creeks. Even the Logan is producing whiting at Ageston Sands.
Flathead numbers are also excellent, although most of the fish caught have been 40 - 60cm.
Mud crab catches continue to be well worth the effort, with excellent results throughout the Pin and southern bay.
Sandies are also good in the bay, although there are not as many in the southern end around the bay islands.
You're going to do a lot of kilometres to find any pelagic fish in Moreton Bay. The best place to look for mackerel has been around the (what was) Four Beacons and start of the Rous Channel.
There have been no reports of tuna this week, although they should be there soon. Look for the birds or surface action and have a small slug ready.
Offshore the spaniards keep coming. They are not big fish but there have been quite a few reports from off headlands, bait grounds and just outside the Pin Bar.
Bottom bashing with paternoster rigs has been pretty slow going, with just a few small snapper reported.
Live baiting has been a different story. As well as mackerel, there have been cobia, kingfish and amberjack caught.
Trolling skirts and live baits has produced mainly bonito, with the occasional wahoo and small black marlin thrown in.
On the freshwater scene, there have been good numbers of smallish redclaw at Somerset Dam. They are in the shallows in less than three metres of water on the newly flooded grass from recent rains.
You need to find the schools if you want to find bass. Blind trolling or dropping baits has been pretty slow going.
Yellowbelly have also been elusive, even in the timbered areas with live shrimp.
