Police have set up a 500 metre exclusion zone around the scene of a fatal crash north of Brisbane.
One person died and another was taken to hospital for observation after a fuel tanker and a van collided about 10.40am.
An emergent situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act was declared about 2.45pm because of concerns over fuel leaking from the truck's 40,000 litre tank.
The highway is expected to be closed for several hours and police are urging motorists to stay away.

One person is dead and another has been taken to hospital after a collision between a fuel tanker and a van north of Brisbane.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said fuel was leaking from the truck's 40,000 litre tank and spilling across the D'Aguilar Highway near Kilcoy, north west of Caboolture.
She said crews were using foam and sand to try to stop the fuel from spreading further but there was no indication it had caught fire.
The road is closed in both directions.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said one person had died and a man had been taken to Caboolture Hospital as a precaution.
It's unclear at this stage which vehicle the deceased person was driving.
The exact location of the incident is also unclear.
The QAS spokeswoman also confirmed a paramedic en route to the crash scene escaped unijured when he rolled his ambulance on the highway.
Other crews attended the scene.
A police spokesman said the highway was unlikely to reopen before nightfall.

A semi-trailer has rolled north of Brisbane, possibly trapping the driver inside.
Emergency services were called to a collision between the semi-trailer and a van on the D'Aguilar Highway near Kilcoy, north-west of Caboolture, about 10.40am.
Australian Traffic Network traffic reporter Penny Dahl said the vehicle was a fuel tanker and the driver was still trapped inside but police weren't able to confirm that.

There are unconfirmed reports the truck has caught fire.

A police spokeswoman said the highway was closed in both directions because of fuel spilled across the road.
She said it was too early to confirm whether the driver was trapped but she didn't believe the truck was on fire.
She said early reports indicated the truck was not a fuel tanker but it was too early to confirm.
Police, fire and ambulance crews are all on site.
An ambulance helicopter is flying to the scene, near Villeneuve Road, Sandy Creek.
