A coroner's report has found a Queensland woman and her daughter who died in mysterious circumstances in Bali were likely killed by the fish they ate at a hotel restaurant.
Noelene Bischoff, 54, and her 14-year-old daughter Yvana, died in January 2014 after falling ill while holidaying on the Indonesian island.
Their family pushed to have an autopsy performed in Queensland and told media in February 2014 food poisoning was the most likely cause.
On Tuesday, State Coroner Terry Ryan released a report into the Bischoffs' death, finding an inquest wasn't needed.
He found the Sunshine Coast women "died within hours of developing a severe reaction to food, likely to have been fish" and listed the cause of death as "allergic type reaction" with asthma a contributing factor.
Obesity was found to also be a contributing factor in the mother's death.
Experienced forensic pathologist Dr Alex Olumbe performed the autopsy about a week after the pair's death.
In February 2014, Dr Olumbe and Chief Forensic Pathologist Dr Charles Naylor told family members the women had died either from an "allergic type reaction caused by food they had eaten, especially fish, or by the so-called scombroid syndrome (also called histamine fish poisoning), or a combination of these causes".
Dr Olumbe noted the features of anaphylaxis and scombroid syndrome were similar because histamine played an important part in both.
He said the "only reliable way to distinguish them was to test a piece of fish for histamine, which was not possible in this case".
Mr Ryan's finding makes no mention of scombroid poisoning as a cause of death but it goes on to highlight a passage from the Australian Government's Smart Traveller warning illness caused by scombroid, ciguatera and other toxins can be a hazard in Indonesia.
"The Queensland Health fact sheet on Naturally Occurring Seafood Toxins notes that scombroid poisoning can occur when certain types of fish, not limited to those of the scombroid species, are not immediately chilled and stored properly," the report reads.
"... This advice applies equally to fish caught and consumed within Australia as well as in overseas destinations.
"While Australia has a comprehensive food safety framework, consumers of food obtained in regions without such a framework, or outside the regulated sale of seafood within Australia need to be aware of the significant risks associated with eating fish that may not have been transported and stored under controlled temperature."
Mr Ryan said the deaths highlighted the importance of being informed about travel destinations and food safety generally.
