LUKE McCutcheon, of Wellington Point, is set to represent Australia in track and field at the Oceania Area Championships in Cairns from May 8 to 10.
The event is run by the Oceania Athletics Association and Luke will compete in race walking.
Luke said he had been a race walk competitor since he was young and had won national and state championships, including a bronze medal at the Australian all schools (under 16) and state champion four years in a row at the Queensland all schools (under 13 to 16).
The 16-year-old race walker said he was excited to compete in the championship in Cairns and represent not only Australia, but Redlands as well.
"As I'm competing for Australia, I also feel proud to say I'm representing the Redlands," he said.
"My main objective for the championship is to race a personal best time, but would be amazing to come away with a medal, podium finish."
Luke said he had a vigorous training schedule but maintained a good balance with study.
"On average, I train 20 to 25 hours a week with my two brothers, depending on what stage of my training program I'm in," he said.
"Cleveland State High School is very supportive, and offer great assistance to make sure my school work is running smoothly.
"I'm also at TAFE once a week studying Certificate 3 in fitness, then onto Certificate 4 so I can be a personal trainer or coach.
"I feel I have a good routine with my training, TAFE and school work."
Luke said his next goal was to represent Australia at the 2016 World Junior Championship in Russia, but his ultimate goal was to compete at the Olympic Games and World Track and Field Championships.
