Southern Bay Cyclones Rugby Club's 1st XV was denied a win at local rivals, Redlands, in their first competition game last Saturday going down 32 to 17.
In a frantic opening both sides competed strongly for the upper hand with little quarter given or received.
Redlands opened the scoring with a penalty goal to lead 3-0, however this served to spur Cyclones on and they registered the opening try to Duane Ferns which was converted by Jason Driver for Cyclones to grab a 7-3 lead.
As the half closed Redlands capitalised on a Cyclones error to regain the lead through a try to go to the break 8-7.
In a slow start to the second half, Cyclones conceded a converted try for Redlands to lead 15-7 and the loss of Jason Driver to a sin bin offence allowed the home team to increase its lead to 22-7.
Cyclones then produced their best period of play as they dominated the scrums and laid a series of platforms to test the Redlands defence which was found wanting when half-back Sam Gregory darted in for a try.
Shortly afterwards Ferns added a try to bring the score to 22-17.
With Cyclones in full flight something had to give and as they continued to press for further scores a simple turnover allowed a Redlands winger to scurry away to extend their lead to 27-17.
In a final flourish Redlands added the final try on the bell for their 32-17 win.
Coach Lew Price put the loss down to inconsistencies in the execution of the game plan and emphasised that failure to turn opportunities into points cost the team dearly.
Cyclones have a bye on Saturday for Anzac Day before travelling to Beenleigh for the next game on May 2.
With school holidays over all the club's age teams have resumed training with the younger groups under 6 to under 9 on Thursdays at 6pm and the older groups under 10 upwards Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm.
