Police reinforcements have been sent to a remote Far North Queensland indigenous community after a riot on Friday in which two officers were injured.
The riot erupted on Friday night after police attended a street brawl in Aurukun, on the north western Cape, about 6.30pm and escalated when a police vehicle ran over the foot of a 52-year-old man.
Later in the night, residents allegedly turned on the community police station, damaging the building and police cars and causing minor injuries to two officers.
A Queensland Health car was also allegedly stolen and later recovered with mechanical damage.
Senior police praised the work of community elders in attempting to calm the situation but extra resources have been sent to the community as tensions continue to simmer.
"Extra police were deployed to the community on Friday and officers continue to actively work with and consult with the community to ensure a peaceful outcome," the Queensland Police Service said in a statement.
A 20-year-old man has been charged with seriously assaulting police and wilful damage of police property and has been remanded in custody to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Monday.
A 19-year-old woman was charged with seriously assaulting police and bailed to appear in Aurukun Court on May 14.
Three further people were charged with public nuisance.
The 52-year-old man whose foot was run over was flown to Cairns Base Hospital for treatment.
Police say investigations are ongoing.
"Investigations, including detailed negotiations with a number of people, continue in relation to this incident," a statement, issued late Sunday, said.
"There have been no further incidents this morning and investigations into all of the incidents continues."
