A man was killed instantly when his car slammed into a power pole and exploded in flames near Ipswich early Monday morning.
The man was the sole occupant of a car that veered off Brisbane Road at Riverview, about 10 kilometres east of Ipswich city centre, about 5.25am.
The crash caused widespread power outages in Riverview and eastern Ipswich, cutting power to approximately 650 homes and businesses, according to Energex.
While 80 per cent of outages were restored within two hours, an Energex spokesman said approximately 130 residents will remain without electricity indefinitely as emergency workers continue to clear the scene.
Queensland Police said Brisbane Road would remain closed indefinitely near the crash site as investigations continue.
Local traffic diversions are in place.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred near the intersection of Webb Street, in Riverview.
Both paramedics and rescue firefighters were called to the scene but the man, the sole occupant of the car, was declared dead.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
