It is a tough one.
Do today's smart phones - which make it incredibly easy to meet your friends at the nearest pub, club or venue for a drink – to then take photographs of yourself and your friends having a drink - and then tell the world about your drinking session through social media – help or hide an anti-drinking message?
The jury is out to me, but I guess I am no longer of the steady drinking generation.
However one group that believes the not-so humble mobile phone does have role in combating Australia's binge drinking mentality is the Hello Sunday Morning not-for–profit group.
On Monday the anti-binge drinking website Hello Sunday Morning launched its first smartphone app, backed by the Vodaphone Foundation.
In 2009 Queenslander Chris Raine shook off his Sunday morning hangover and decided to do something about it.
He formed Hello Sunday Morning, which has since prompted 45,000 Australians over five years to think about how much they drink and modify their drinking.
Last December Queensland Bulls cricketer Nick Buchanan become a Queensland ambassador for the program.
Chris Raine thinks a mobile phone app is simply the next step because mobile phones are already being used by Australians to chart their health.
"Well, 60 per cent of people that come to our web platform access it through their mobile phone," he said.
"And the second thing is that we have designed this phone app to take Hello Sunday Morning in a different direction."
That new direction is trying to get people involved without having to be committed for the 12-week program to restrict your drinking.
"Only three per cent of the people who come to our website actually take on that challenge," he said.
Now Chris Raine wants people to incrementally become involved in changing their drinking behaviour.
The drinking triggers are still stress, confidence, identity and self identity.
Instead of one big challenge the group has broken its mould to offer 62 smaller challenges to build towards a change in an individual's drinking behaviour.
It works by encouraging people to complete an online questionnaire about their drinking and then "reporting in" once a week.
"So we have this once a week reflection on how you are drinking and why you are drinking," he said.
Chris Raine said it was difficult to link the slow decrease in drinking among younger Australians to an increase in party drugs, based around amphetamines.
"Yes there is an increase in the use of ice, but that increase is negligible to the size of the drinking culture and the amount of people who drink."
He believed the current fascination with amphetamines was linked to price, but reminded that experts agreed alcohol was still the main social drug problem.
"We are a drug-taking society and unfortunately we do not have a drug-supporting side to it," he said.
"We don't help them and help them have a better relationship with alcohol."
Hello Sunday Morning is his attempt to redress that problem.
The smartphone app is the newest and most private way of getting there.
