THINKING outside this world is all in a day's work for 15-year-old Josh Clay, who has been selected to compete in a United States contest to design a home for those living on the Moon.
The year 10 Sheldon College student will show off his lunar skills at the World Space Design Competition at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, US.
He was selected after taking up space design as a school subject and will collaborate with members from the Australian Combined Schools team to come up with new ideas to protect astronauts in space from radiation.
NASA engineers and scientists will work with the teams to design practical space gadgets and materials for anyone living on the Moon.
"It will be my role to create a safe, comfortable and viable environment for the inhabitants of the moon to reside in," Joshua said.
During space design classes, Josh learned about the need for radiation protection to survive in space.
Mum Shantelle Clay said her son's love of space design started before he enrolled in the out-of-this-world class.
"He has always loved space but it started in grade 8 when he tried chemistry for the first time," she said.
Redland City Council will give Joshua $200 towards his sojourn after he was successful in obtaining a Councillors' Small Grants for Excellence.
