Australia's National Day of Healing, formerly known as National Sorry Day, was marked in the Redlands with an event at Cooee Indigenous Elders Community and Family Education Centre in Cleveland.
The day is held annually on May 26 to remember the children of Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Islander descent who, under State and Federal Acts at the time, were forcibly removed from their families from the early 1900s to the early 1970s.
The event in Cleveland, held in conjunction with the family education and resource centre and UNAA Indigenous Youth Advisory Counsel for Queensland, included a traditional smoking ceremony, Welcome to Country, traditional Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Island dance and music, speeches by Elders and government representatives, a sausage sizzle and face painting for the children.
