Fees for market organisers holding events on Redland City Council property will be reviewed after a motion unanimously passed a meeting on Wednesday.
Division 1 Councillor Wendy Boglary called for the council’s chief executive, Bill Lyons to investigate options for either reducing or removing fees for events on public land that “benefit the greater local community both economically and socially”.
While this review applied to any event organised in council parks, Cr Boglary singled out market organisers as one of the main beneficiaries from her proposal during a speech to councillors at the meeting.
She said many smaller operators had set up markets with the same success as other events set up from outside the city.
“We have many local entrepreneurs which use our parks and our roads and our car parks for smaller markets,” she said.
“They need a hand from council just like the larger ones coming in.”
Cr Boglary said all markets benefitted the local economy.
“We need to get behind [the smaller markets] and I just want to make sure they’re included and assisted with the fees,” she said.
A timeframe was not set for the handover of the investigation, but the matter will be reviewed at a future council workshop.
