Melbourne defender Colin Garland is expected to sign a new contract soon but the Demons remain uncertain about the future of Jeremy Howe.
Garland, a restricted free agent, has had a strong season, missing only the two matches through injury, and is said to be happy at the club.
Demons coach Paul Roos suggested a deal could be agreed soon.
"I think that's progressing pretty quickly. My understanding on that is that there's an offer on the table," he said on Friday.
"It's not far off as far as I know but, again, I haven't delved too much into that, so we're hopeful Col will be fine."
However, it's understood Howe and his manager Ben Niall will debate rival offers once the Demons' season is over on Sunday.
The 25-year-old utility has played every match this season, often in defence, and is seen to have strong marketing capabilities because of his high-flying marks.
"To my knowledge they haven't asked for an offer yet, so again I don't get too heavily involved in that," Roos said.
"I think Jeremy needs to finish off the season really well and then, probably like a lot of players now, they wait, they weigh up other options, they see what else is available and then they come back to the club.
"So exactly where it's at, I'm not 100 per cent certain. But Jeremy and his management have been really keen to wait … and source out other opportunities. That's just the way the footy world works now."
Howe, who is not a free agent and would require a trade if he wants out, had put contract negotiations on hold at the start of the season but there have been recent conversations with the club.
The Demons, expected to be active during the trade period, are among those clubs linked to the Gold Coast Suns' Harley Bennell, although the midfielder is contracted until the end of 2017.
Roos and his men hope to finish an inconsistent year off on a bright note against Greater Western Sydney at Etihad Stadium — a venue they have not won at since 2007 — on Sunday.
"The frustration … is the good has been really, really good. We've played some terrific footy this year in games and within games but the disappointing thing is the drop-off is still too great," Roos said.
"We need to analyse why that is and how to fix it. That will be probably be the most important thing in list management discussions in the off-season."
