St James Lutheran Community Kindergarten and Child Care has started a petition to save its playground, built on 650sqm of council land.
As part of the City Plan 2015, Redland City Council has proposed to rezone the play area as Principal Centre.
The newly named zoning is consistent with commercial use.
Vice president of the centre's management committee Fran Wilson said the centre refuted the proposed zoning on the grounds it did not reflect current land use or community sentiment.
"A zoning of community facility (CF2) would be a more appropriate," she said. "This CF zoning will also help to secure the land for future use, whereas a commercial zoning may leave the centre vulnerable to any future developments that the current or future councils may decide upon."
More than 250 people signed the petition in the first two days.
For more than 42 years, the centre has had an agreement with the church to lease the park at the back of the centre as an outside play area.
St James Lutheran Church has a permit from council to occupy the park free of charge.
A Council spokeswoman reinforced that no decision had been made as to what to do with the land at 7 John Street and intends to discuss options with St James Lutheran Church.
“Even if the land at 7 John Street is rezoned, it is premature to speculate on what will happen to it,” the council spokesman said. “It is quite possible council could continue the current use of the land. If council does decide to sell, council will offer St James Lutheran Church first option to buy.
The not for profit organisation, run by a volunteer parent management committee, hopes with enough signatures to be able to secure the land for future use.
The deadline for all submissions is November 27.
