THE Gatorade Queensland Triathlon Series will be back at Raby on Sunday, October 11 for round two of the series.
The event will be the first of three scheduled for Raby Bay this season.
A Gatorade Tri Series spokeswoman said the Raby Bay venue was the most popular of the series, with many events selling out.
Catering for a range of participants, including elite athlete Sam Betten, round two offers the QTS Super Sprint (400m swim/15km bike ride/4km run), the Rackley Swimming Short Enticer (200m swim/5km bike ride/2km run) and Sheldon College Kool Kids (100m swim/2km bike ride/400m run).
Looking forward to the event are Cleveland’s Tony Cameron-Kirk, who at 80 has taken part in more than 20 triathlons since he began training at 76 and Aidan Rowe, 12, of Thornlands, who will be entering his first triathlon.
Aidan, who also plays touch football, said he had been training for the event over the past month.
“I have a friend who does it and he said it’s a fun and energetic thing to do, so I decided to give it a go,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to the run at the end.”
Mr Cameron-Kirk said he was keen to test himself in the Tri Series event.
“Doing a triathlon is like Christmas to me,” he said.
“It’s tough at times, but it’s just like Christmas.”
Mr Cameron-Kirk said he hoped his participation in the sport would encourage other older people to exercise more.
“No matter how old you are, you can always develop,” he said.
“When I ran my first 5km, I never thought I’d run 10km, but you can develop.”
Online entries for the event will be available until 12 noon on Friday, October 9.
Entries will also be taken onsite on Saturday from 2:30pm to 4:30pm and on Sunday from 5:15am to 6:15am unless sold out (late fees apply).
Presentations will take place at the event expo in Shore Street West opposite Stockland Cleveland.
