Dragon boat club Redlands Sea Dragons held a blessing of its new boat at Thompson’s Beach, Victoria Point on Sunday, October 4.
In a Buddhist ceremony called Dotting of the Eyes, the blessing was performed by monks from Priestdale’s Chung Tian Temple and included chanting and words of protection and compassion.
The monks also dotted the eyes of the boat’s dragon with red paint, which symbolically opened its eyes for the boat to see its way through the waters.
Club president Rosemary Andrews said the ceremony was one of the sport’s long-held traditions.
“You just don’t feel comfortable without your dragon’s eyes dotted,” she said.
Redlands Sea Dragons meets at Weinam Creek Marina, Redland Bay every Saturday from 6.30am, launching from the boat ramp by 7am.
Ms Andrews said the club was currently seeking new members.
