Heated clash between Jack Viney and Tom McDonald at Melbourne training

Jack Viney and Tom McDonald argued and pushed each other during the high-energy session, which included an hour of match simulation.

McDonald was angered by a rough Viney tackle during an earlier drill and teammates had to pull the pair apart, according to the club's website.

Bernie Vince did not make an appearance on the track and the club said he remained on a modified training program, though it has been nearly three weeks since he said he expected to be back in full training within the fortnight.

Last year's best and fairest winner has been suffering from hamstring tendonitis and broke his little finger in December.

Former captain Jack Trengove did not participate in the session, but he did join in non-contact training and Melbourne said they were hopeful he will be back to full fitness next week.

It has been 15 months since Trengove had a second round of surgery on a troublesome bone in his left foot. He last played an AFL game in round two, 2014.

Twenty-four-year-old ruckman Max Gawn looked strong, as did midfielder Angus Brayshaw and Jayden Hunt.

Hunt was drafted at pick 57 overall in 2013, but he too has struggled with injuries and is yet to play a senior game.

AFL pre-season competition the NAB Challenge will begin with a game between Hawthorn and Carlton next Thursday night, but the Demons will not play until 27 February, when they take on Port Adelaide.
