For the first time this year, Redlands Junior Rugby League Club is fielding a girls’ team.
The Under 14s team will compete in the South East Queensland Divisional competition which includes teams from Brisbane, Ipswich and Gold Coast regions.
The girls’ competition differs from the junior boys in that it spans 14 weeks, with all games being played in ‘gala day’ format on Saturdays at a nominated host venue.
The girls also have the opportunity to gain representative selection for the Brisbane Stingers U14s. Further achievement can be gained by selection to represent SEQ at the state carnival at which time the Qld U14 girls team will be selected. As there are many pathways opening for girls in league, Redlands are hoping to field U16, U18 and Open women’s teams in the near future.
The 2016 U14 season started last month at the Beenleigh JRLC. This was the first time most of the Redlands girls had played rugby league, but under the guidance of coach Andrew Brown and trainer Craig Fredericks the team came away with a win from the three games they played.
Next Saturday there will be a full day of rugby league with Redlands hosting the SEQ junior girls (U14, U16 and U18) competition at Pinklands Sporting Complex. Games start at 8.30am and run throughout the day, followed at 3.30pm with the Redlands Masters playing.
