On Sunday the Russell Island Junior Rugby League Football Club had only one side engaged in a home game. The Under 6s played the visiting Easts Mt Gravatt Eagles in an action-packed try fest thriller.
New player Kalvary Tuialii in his first game ever scored an excellent try. His defence alongside Ryda Wilmott, another try scorer, was sound.
Encouraged by coach Allan Murphy, his twin grandsons Nature and Lyrix Komene tore through the opposition like tornadoes to score two tries each. It was a great team effort.
Throughout the game the Stingray Cheer Squad put on a dazzling display entertaining the players, officials and spectators. Each week the cheer squad gets better and better under the guidance of coach Kellie Plenty.
On the mainland the Under 11s overpowered the Capalaba Warriors 30-28. Riley Kaye was potent and scored a marvellous try. Max Wilmott touched down twice and kicked a conversion goal, Lachlan Searle kicked another, while Man of the Match Tate McDonald ploughed through and by his opponents to score three sizzling tries plus added another conversion goal. The wily ball distributor Amy Pike manoeuvred the side around the park to Stingrays’ advantage.
Coach Dale Wilmott was proud of his Under 9s performance against Easts Mt Gravatt Eagles. Try scorers Haydon Wilkes (two), Malcolm Wilmott (one) and Tyhler Searle (one) displayed remarkable skills. Archie Moore, Tyler Crowther and Nathaniel Hoppo, with sound defensive efforts, helped the Stingrays inhibit the Eagles scoring effort.
Next Sunday’s games see the Under 6s playing away against Stradbroke Island while the Under 9s and the Under 11s will have home games against Inala Panthers and Waterford Demons.
