SIX schools in Redland City will benefit from the latest round in the state government's $12million flashing lights project to make busy roads safer to cross.
The schools are among 100 to receive flashing school zone signs in the next three months , with plans to put in lights at 300 before 2019.
Lights informing drivers to slow down will be installed at Vienna Woods State School on Heffernan Road, Wellington Point State High School on Badgen Road, Cleveland State School on Wynyard Street and Ormiston State School on Gordon Street.
Thornlands State School and Redland District Special School on Panorama Drive will also get the lights along with Victoria Point State School on School Road.
Capalaba MP Don Brown said the road safety program was growing from strength to strength.
“The flashing signs have been a resounding success since the Labor Government introduced them in 2011, with more than 600 installed in school zones across Queensland,” he said.
“Students arriving and leaving school can be preoccupied and unpredictable around roads and cars. That’s why we’re committed to improve road safety surrounding schools.”
Factors such as accident history, traffic volumes, pedestrian movements, the speed limit and visibility are considered before schools are selected for the lights.
