Redlands couple Dennis and Betty Keeble celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary renewing their wedding vows in front of family and friends.
They gathered for a high tea at the Lions Community Hall, Cleveland, on March 26.
They were surprised and honoured to receive congratulatory messages from Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, local and state MPs, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Governor, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Governor General Paul Cosgrove and the Queen.
It was love at first sight when the pair met in January 1956, while they were both serving in the Royal Navy.
Betty’s family were due to leave for a new life in Australia in June that year, so the couple decided to marry six weeks later in Portsmouth on March 28, 1956.
Their first daughter, Denise, was born on the island of Malta where Dennis was serving on patrol boats in the waters around the Suez Canal, and then the troubled Cyprus.
When Dennis left the navy, the family returned to Cambridge, where with a midwife looking on, Dennis delivered their second daughter, Deborah.
They arrived in Australia in 1960 and lived in many places before retiring to the Redlands in 1997. The couple love singing and have performed in many local theatricals productions and choirs.
Dennis is a talented artist and although in his 80s, he has decided to start a new venture selling his fine art reproductions online.
