REDLANDS schools have excelled in the Wynnum Manly Eisteddfod.
Birkdale State School’s junior and senior choirs were awarded five first places and two third places between them.
The choirs also won the championship trophies for the choir with the highest aggregate score over three sections.
They won $325 in prize money.
It is the third year the junior choir, made up of students in years 2 to 4, have been awarded the championship trophy.
The senior choir, consisting of students in years 5 and 6, have been awarded the trophy for the past two years.
The Ormiston State School senior band won the year 6 and under band section and the trophy for the highest marks.
The school’s senior choir won the ‘action section’ in the eisteddfod for the second year in a row.
Principal Neil Randall said the successes for the outstanding senior choir and senior band were well deserved.
“It was a just result for all the collective work and commitment from (conductors) Elizabeth Patterson and Thomas Melton and our talented students,” he said.
Birkdale State School’s music teacher Helen Deagon said attributed the school’s success to the introduction of a music excellence program, which included choral development, in 2014.
She said students worked weekly on developing techniques in breathing, tone, pitch, diction and harmony.
“This, in turn, allows the school’s choral repertoire to include more diverse and complex works,” she said.
