RITA Lugton who played bowls into her 90s has just turned 100.
The long-time Wellington Point resident celebrated her birthday at her son’s home in Cleveland with her four children, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grand children.
A further 30-odd family members and friends travelled long distances to be with Mr Lugton.
Daughter Gillian Lugton said her mother lived with her husband Bob at Wellington Point for nearly 20 years before he passed away in 2012.
“They had been married for 72 years,’’ she said. “Both were very involved with the Redlands Sports Bowls Club, with both being presented with their matriarch and patriarch medals. Rita played bowls into her 90's.’’
Ms Lugton lived independently until at 97 she moved into an assisted-living home closer to two of her daughters at Logan.
“As well as bowls, Rita loved her garden which was always an absolute picture,’’ Ms Lugton said. “At 100 years old she still enjoys playing scrabble and crocheting hand towels ready for Christmas gifts to the family.
“Rita enjoyed her party and said ‘I am enjoying the day so much that l look forward to seeing you all again next year’."
